Outer Banks Dog-Friendly Beaches by Town
Each OBX town has its own rules for dogs on the beach. Here’s what you need to know before you leash up and head out:
- Corolla: Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round as long as they’re leashed. There’s no restriction on leash length, but owners must clean up after pets.
- Duck: This is one of the most dog-friendly beach towns in the Outer Banks. Dogs are allowed off-leash on the beach as long as they’re under voice control and supervised.
- Southern Shores: Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. from May 15 to September 15. Leashes must be 10 feet or shorter.
- Nags Head: Dogs are welcome year-round, but they must be on a leash no longer than 10 feet at all times.
Tip: Always bring waste bags, check local signage, and carry water; summer heat can sneak up fast on those paws. Remember, if the sand is too hot for your feet, it’s too hot for theirs, too.
Dog-Friendly Parks & Outdoor Spots
Need a break from the sand? The Outer Banks has lots of dog-friendly scenic areas where your pup is welcome to roam:
- Historic Corolla Park – Located behind the Whalehead Club, this beautiful soundside spot is great for sunset walks and picnic breaks. Dogs are welcome on leash and can attend seasonal events like Whalehead Wednesdays.
- Wright Brothers National Memorial – While pets aren’t allowed inside buildings, leashed dogs are welcome on the grounds. Just follow the B.A.R.K. principles: Bag waste, Always on leash, Respect wildlife, Know where to go.
- Jockey’s Ridge State Park – In Nags Head, this iconic sand dune is open to leashed dogs (6 feet max leash length). Early morning or sunset is ideal for cooler sand and stunning views.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants and Shops
Hungry after a full day splashing in the waves or playing fetch on the shore? Many Outer Banks restaurants offer patio seating where pups are welcome. After your meal, why not treat your best friend to a new toy or tasty treat just for them? Check out the businesses below for options near your vacation rental:
- Sweet T’s Coffee, Beer, & Wine (Duck) – A relaxing spot with outdoor tables, perfect for a cold drink and a lazy afternoon.
