For those looking to feel more at one with nature, Nags Head Woods Preserve is calling your name. This nature preserve, run by the Nature Conservancy, works hard to conserve a pristine native habitat for wildlife. It is home to over 550 species of plants, 150 species of birds, as well as numerous species of reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals, and insects. Bring your binoculars and spot birds such as the red-bellied woodpecker and warblers. As you meander, look for forest animals such as river otters, bobcats, and foxes. In this wonderland of flora and fauna, you are surrounded by nature just as it should be.

Nags Head Wood Preserve Trails

Lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails! For those who love to hike, there are numerous options available.

Center Trail, Sweetgum Swamp Trail, and Blueberry Ridge Trail

These three trails form a loop trail system that ranges from easy to challenging, making them a good choice for groups who want to choose their own adventure. Wind through forests and wetlands, and experience an unforgettable hike. Please note, pets are not allowed.

Discovery Trail

If you are looking for a short, moderate, and pet-friendly trail, the Discovery Trail is for you! It weaves through a forest, freshwater ponds, and across wooden bridges, allowing you to soak up nature all around you.

Roanoke Trail

This easy hike is on a wide dirt path and is pet- and family-friendly. If you’re interested in learning more about the area’s history, it also features an audio tour, which you can access from your cellphone.

Nags Head Town Trail

For those who want a moderate hike, the Nags Head Town Trail is calling. It winds through forested dunes, crosses a road, and ends at a beach on Roanoke Sound, allowing you to take in a lovely view of the water. No pets, please!

Know Before You Go:

  • Best time to visit: Spring through fall, when wildlife is most abundant.
  • What to bring: Closed-toe hiking shoes, a hat, long pants, water, a cellphone, insect repellent, binoculars for bird-watching, and a leash if you are bringing your pup!
  • ADA Accessibility: There is an ADA accessible pathway, parking, and fishing platform, so everyone can enjoy this beautiful place.
