Elizabethan Gardens History
The botanical gardens date back to 1950 when Mrs. Charles Cannon, Mrs. Inglis Fletcher, and Sir Evelyn Wrench asked a non-profit group called the Garden Club of North Carolina to sponsor a two-acre garden adjacent to Fort Raleigh National Park. The idea behind it was that it would bring more value to the land of Sir Walter Raleigh’s lost colonists. The Lost Colony happens to be the spot where 117 colonists established the first English settlements in the New World and mysteriously disappeared a couple of years later. To learn more about their journey and the life of Queen Elizabeth I, you’ll just have to visit the gardens yourself!
Things to Do at the Elizabethan Gardens
Once you’ve arrived, you and your group can take a tour, where you’ll be able to see some cool spots, including the Sunken Garden, the statue of Queen Elizabeth I, or the ancient live oak!
