The Only Guide You Need to Biking on the Outer Banks
Before you set off to explore the Outer Banks, here are some of our favorite shops to find equipment rentals.
Corolla
Corolla is the best place to bike if you’re interested in stopping at various shops and restaurants. You’ll have access to many of these along the ten miles of bike paths available here. These paths also lead you to the famous Currituck Beach Lighthouse and other well-known attractions in the area, including the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education and the Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary. You’ll find plenty of bike racks nearby, so don’t hesitate to stop along the path to experience these attractions.
Duck and Southern Shores
The bike paths in Duck and Southern Shores are definite favorites among locals! The trail runs parallel to Highway 12, although it’s a safe distance away from the road to keep bikers safe from traffic. You can also find access to shopping and dining on this path. It’s easy to combine a leisure bike ride through the area with a relaxing lunch or a little shopping. You’ll also discover easy beach access. You could even pack a picnic and enjoy a meal on the sand.
Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills
Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills are close in proximity to one another, and you’ll find a seemingly endless number of avenues to explore. One of our favorite trails will take you through the marshes and swamplands of the Kitty Hawk Coastal Reserve. While riding through neighborhoods like Kitty Hawk Woods, you can discover paths linked to some of the other towns in the area. This allows you to roam and explore until your heart is content. Lastly, the bike path through Kill Devil Hills leads to the Wright Brothers Memorial. This stop is always a hit for history buffs!
Nags Head
Travel to the southern portion of Nags Head to find a unique seaside bike path. This part of the trail the best seaside cycling on the Outer Banks. We recommend taking this route during sunset or sunrise.
Ocracoke Island
You can spend a delightful afternoon riding bikes through the narrow streets of the Ocracoke Village. Although you’ll have to take a ferry ride here, the island is especially bike-friendly. There are plenty of shops and restaurants that will fill your day with pleasant activities.
